Las Vegas, Nevada
Las Vegas is the largest city in the state of Nevada and the county seat of Clark County. With an estimated population of 664,971 as of 2015, it is also the most populous city in the Western United States. The city is well known for its casinos, nightlife and its position as a major tourist destination in the United States. Nearby cities include Reno, Henderson, and North Las Vegas.
The first European visitor to the area was José Miguel Rodríguez Cabrillo, sailing under the Spanish flag in 1542. He named the site "Las Vegas" after the Virgin Mary. In 1751, a group of Spanish colonizers established a presidio and mission on the site of present-day Las Vegas. In 1829, a group of Mormon pioneers led by John C. Frémont traveled through the area and chose the site for a new city.
Las Vegas was founded in 1905 as a small town near the Colorado River called El Vado. In 1911, Las Vegas was incorporated as a city. The completion of the Las Vegas Boulevard in 1931 led to an influx of visitors and increased land values, which caused a housing crisis. In 1933, the New York-based Hollywood film company Paramount Pictures acquired a tract of land near the city and built a movie studio on it. In 1941, the studio was purchased by the Army Air Forces for use as a training base.
During World War II, the military presence led to a rapid increase in population and a need for new infrastructure, such as schools and hospitals. The city's growth slowed after the war, but it began to recover in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1992, Las Vegas hosted the Republican National Convention. The city's population continued to grow, and by 2000, it had reached its current population of 664,971.
