MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL) is the parent company of the MTR network, which is the largest public transport system in the world. The headquarters is located at Admiralty Centre in Central, Hong Kong.
In January 2019, it was announced that the company will move its headquarters to The Central, a new development in the central business district of Hong Kong.
The MTR Corporation Limited was founded on 1 October 1984 as a spin-off of the Hong Kong Tramways Company Limited (HTCL). The company's original name was abbreviated from "MTR" to "MTR Corporation Limited" in March 1997.
In 1985, MTRCL took over the operation of the Kowloon-Canton Railway from the British Colonial Government. In 1988, MTRCL took over the operation of the Tsuen Wan Railway from HTCL.
In 1990, the company commenced construction of the Tung Chung Line. The line was opened on 15 December 1993.
In 1996, MTRCL took over the operation of the Airport Express from the Aviation Authority of Hong Kong. The Airport Express was extended to New Territories in 2002.
In 1998, MTRCL commenced construction of the Sha Tin to Central Link. The line was opened on 30 December 2003.
In 2006, MTRCL commenced construction of the Sha Tin to Eastern Link. The line was opened on 28 March 2017.
