What is MARS?
Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and is the smallest and the most distant of the eight planets in the solar system. Mars is similar in size to Earth but has a much lower gravity and is much less dense. The Red Planet has a very thin atmosphere that is composed of mostly carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and oxygen. There is no water on Mars, but traces of water ice have been found in the polar regions.

The Mars Exploration Programme was founded in 1978 with the goal of achieving human exploration of the Red Planet by the end of the 21st century. The programme's first major accomplishment was the discovery of water ice on Mars in 2001. Since then, JPL has led numerous missions to Mars, including the three Viking probes that landed on the planet in 1976, and the Mars Curiosity rover, which has been exploring Gale Crater since 2012.
