This document is intended to provide basic information about the IBM i 7.2 installation and configuration process.
As you read through this document, keep in mind the following:
Installation of IBM i 7.2 is performed on an IBM i 7.2 host machine.
Before you can install IBM i 7.2, you must first install the IBM i 7.2 software components.
You can install IBM i 7.2 on one or more computers.
The IBM i 7.2 installation process is divided into four phases: preinstallation, installation, postinstallation, and system test.
IMPORTANT: After you install IBM i 7.2, you must perform a system test before you can start using the new software. For more information about system testing, see the System Test chapter in the documentation.
Preinstallation
Before you install IBM i 7.2, you must first install the IBM i 7.2 software components. This section describes how to do this.

To install the IBM i 7.2 software components, you must first install the IBM i 7.2 preinstallation software. This section describes how to do this.
To install the IBM i 7.2 preinstallation software
You can install the IBM i 7.2 preinstallation software on a computer that is not being used for any other purpose. The preinstallation software is used to prepare the computer for the installation of IBM i 7.2.
To install the IBM i 7.2 preinstallation software
To install the IBM i 7.2 preinstallation software, follow these steps:
1. Boot your computer from the installation media. For more information about installing IBM i 7.2, see the Installation Guide for IBM i 7.2, which is available on the IBM i website.
2. When you reach the Welcome screen, press F5 to begin the installation.
3. During the installation, you will be asked to select a language for the installation. Select the language that you want to use and press Enter.
4. After you have selected a language, you will be asked to choose a keyboard layout. Select the keyboard layout that you want to use and press Enter.
5. After you have selected a keyboard layout, you will be asked to choose a time zone. Select the time zone that you want to use and press Enter.
6. After you have selected a time zone, you will be asked to choose a destination disk for the installation. Select a disk that is large enough to hold the software and press Enter.
7. The installation will begin copying the software files to your disk. When the installation is finished, press Esc to return to the Welcome screen and press F10 to start the system test.
8. The system test will check your computer for any problems and will report any problems to you. If there are no problems, press Enter to start the system test. If there are problems, continue with step 9.
9. If there are problems with the system test, go to step 10. If there are no problems, go to step 11.

11. To reinstall the software components, go to step 12. To restart your computer, press F5 during startup and choose to restart your computer from the boot menu.
