This article is about the European Central Bank. For the Eurozone bank, see European Central Bank

The European Central Bank (ECB) is the central bank of the European Union and one of the seven institutions of the European System of Central Banks. It is located in Frankfurt, Germany.

The ECB's primary objective is to maintain price stability within the Eurozone. It does this by issuing euros, which are used as the currency of the EU and as the euro equivalent of other national currencies. The ECB also conducts economic policy in support of growth and job creation in the EU. In addition, the ECB provides emergency liquidity to banks in times of stress.

The ECB is governed by a governing council, which is chaired by the president of the ECB. The council consists of the president, the vice-president, and four other members. The board of governors, which is composed of the presidents of the central banks of the Eurozone member states, supervises the ECB's operations.

The ECB was established on 1 January 1998, following the signing of the Treaty on European Union. The Treaty provided for the establishment of a European System of Central Banks, headed by a single central bank. The main objectives of the ECB were to manage and conduct the monetary policy of the Eurozone, and to provide liquidity to banks in times of stress. The Treaty also provided for the appointment of the president of the ECB, which was first held by Wim Duisenberg.

In 2006, the ECB started to provide financial assistance to member states in times of economic difficulty. This support was extended to countries in recession in 2009. In June 2012, the ECB announced that it would start providing financial assistance to countries that were not in recession, as well as to newly formed EU states. The aid provided by the ECB is known as quantitative easing (QE). QE consists of buying bonds from member states' governments in an effort to increase their value, and thus stimulate economic growth.
