What is BALPHA?
BALPHA is a consortium of leading academic and research institutions in the UK and Europe focused on advancing the understanding and treatment of brain disorders.
BALPHA headquarters is a fictional organization appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The organization is depicted as a secret government agency that studies the Super-Human species.
The organization was first introduced in "The Amazing Spider-Man" #129 (January 1974), and was created by writer Stan Lee and artist John Romita Sr.
BALPHA has been featured in various incarnations over the years, but is most commonly depicted as a clandestine government agency that investigates and studies superhuman activity. In the 2010s, the organization has come into conflict with the superhero team the Avengers, who believe that the agency is using its resources to track and monitor their activities.
In "Secret Wars" (2016), the organization is dismantled and replaced by the Superhuman Registration Act.
BALPHA was founded by Professor Charles Xavier and Dr. Jean Grey after they discovered that the mutant powers of Kurt Wagner were not simply a result of an mutation but were in fact due to a "gene-bomb". Xavier and Grey traveled to Auschwitz concentration camp to find the bomber, but were captured by the Nazis instead. The Nazis used Xavier's mutant powers to brainwash him into becoming the new leader of the Nazi regime, known as Magneto.
With help from Spider-Man, Wolverine, Storm, and Hank Pym, Xavier was able to break free from Magneto's control and banish him from Earth. Xavier decided to create a secret society to study the mutant species in order to prevent such events from happening again. The first members of this society were Beast, Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, and Jean Grey. Over time, other mutants joined the society, including Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Rogue.
Xavier later passed away, and his successor as head of BALPHA was Professor X's brother, Professor Charles Xavier II. In recent years, BALPHA has come into conflict with the superhero team the Avengers, who believe that the agency is using its resources to track and monitor their activities. This conflict culminated in the "Secret Wars" storyline, in which the organization was dismantled and replaced by the Superhuman Registration Act.
In recent years, BALPHA has been led by Kate Pryde.
BALPHA has a variety of superhuman members, including:
