The company was founded in 1991 by Chris Albrecht, Viacom president at the time, and Barry Diller, then chairman and CEO of Fox. Starz originally operated as a premium channel and broadcast a limited schedule of movies and television shows from Sony Pictures Entertainment. In 1997, Starz acquired the pay television channel Prime Time Entertainment from Liberty Media for $370 million. That same year, Starz entered into an agreement with HBO to distribute its non-Prime Time programming on the premium channel.
In 2001, Starz acquired movie and television production company New Line Cinema. On January 8, 2006, Starz acquired movie and television production company Ardent Studios. In 2007, Starz acquired movie distributor Relativity Media. That same year, Starz acquired a 50% stake in European satellite broadcaster Encore Europe.
